Hooray, it's giveaway week from Sew Mama Sew! For those of you who stop by Lilac Lane often, welcome back! For those of you who are new here, welcome to Lilac Lane! QuiltWoman.com. My fabric will be out soon (fallish?) with Andover fabrics! I'm am absolutely thrilled about that and can hardly believe it every time I think about it.

I love hand embroidery!! I prefer PDF patterns so I can get crackin on it immediately..
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of an embroiderer but I do appreciate other people's work. And I'm always a bit disappointed when I look at a finished piece and can still see the transfer or printed pattern underneath, no matter how neatly they've stithced their work. So, on that basis I think I probably prefer a pdf pattern that can be traced with a temporary fabric pen and removed once the hard work has been done!

I don't embroider much - though it is tempting. I think a PDF that would be traceable - or could be gone over with a tracing wheel or something would be the route I would go... complicated question... so much depends on what surface/color you want to embroider on, and I know for me it probably would not be your normal colors.

ReplyDeleteI just recently starting doing embroidery. I don't mind PDF patterns but have never used any iron-on patterns. i have just traced my patterns onto the fabric. Seems to work ok. Sorry I am not of more assistance.
ReplyDeleteI love embroidery. and I am always looking for new designs. I buy a lot of things on etsy because there are so many different styles. I love pdf patterns because they are easy to tranfer and then I always have them to print off whenever I want.
ReplyDeleteI love hand embroidery items.. My mom made each one of the grandkids pillowcases with special stuff embroidered on them before she passed away.. She always used the ones that you iron on. I wish I knew how to embroider. I would love the patterns!! I love all of your work!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou know me, and you know I love my needle and thread. I usually just use the blue pen when tracing a pattern, but I think you should go ahead and invent iron on printer ink. That would be awesome.

ReplyDeleteI do like to embroider but don't get much time to. I like pdf versions but also if you found out how to print them with washable ink that would be even better! My husband's grandma embroiders baby quilts from Jack Dempsey(that is pretty much the only brand) for every great-grandchild. Since she doesn't really know how to use a computer I have ordered all her patterns for her. If you are coming out with some designs that could be made into a baby quilt that would be wonderful!
ooh all as one prize? fun! I have to say I normally don't use embroidery patterns - it's easier just to draw it myself or freehand (not that I do much). For crewel embroidery or something more involved than just an outline of a picture, though, I've been known to buy kits/patterns. Washable ink is all I've used.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do love embroidery. I use it as my vacation sewing projects. I prefer pdf versions rather than iron ons. That way I can make changes to the design if I want to - not that I'd ever want to change one of your designs. Best wishes, Kathie L in Allentown

ReplyDeleteI like to do hand embroidery as well as embroidery on my machine. I usually use either the blue wash-off pens or Fons & Porter's washable graphite pencils.
ReplyDeleteI'm too imprecise in my 'regular' embroidery (as opposed to cross-stitch, love the grid of aida cloth!) to feel comfortable with iron-on patterns that wouldn't wash away. I've bought some, mind, but am planning on tracing them like I would with a pdf.

PDF patterns are great, as long as they are sized so they can be easily printed, and don't have to be enlarged. I've never used an iron on transfer. I have a great light box and a really handy blue pen that disappears with a spritz of water.

ReplyDeleteI have embroidered from the iron on patterns but not for a long time. Most of my embroidery now is done from my own free hand drawings and only on labels I make for my quilts. There are so many cute embroidery patterns out there now, I may take it up during the fall and winter.

ReplyDeleteI not into embroidery - but I've only every done cross stitch. I wasn't a big fan - I like quick projects - my attention span is too short. If it takes more than a day or two, I'm bored and it usually ends up in the "someday I'll finish" pile...

I love doing redwork and other embroidery. I use dressmaker carbon to trash my patterns, it washes out. PDF patterns work for me. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI'm a "wannabe" at many things but I have done some embroidery. Years ago, my mom and I embroidered some pillows of our own design. That was a long time ago before 4 children came along and when I look at my pillows I think I need to do that again. Now I've taught my 11 year old daughter to embroidery and we used the iron-on design. She had great fun but has now moved own to designing her own felt animals and selling them to her friends (she has done over 70 so far - I'm so proud of her).

When I was young I did hand embroidered with iron transfer patterns. I haven't done any hand embroidery since then. Now I have a sewing machine that does embroidery as well and I love it.

ReplyDeleteI haven't had much experience in embroidering but I did attend a free workshop at an expo once and was amazed with the iron on patterns which the lady said was good for a few more gos. Another thing to learn now - embroidery.

ReplyDeleteI do a lot of embroidery but I usually don't use patterns because I'm lazy and it's too much work. But if I were to go for patterns, I'm ok with pdf or iron-on. If the design is not too detailed, I could do with pdf. But for the ones with a lot of details, iron-on sounds better.

I love embroidery as well and think PDF is great.
As for ink...I make tags using fabric in my regular printer (adhered to cardstock using repositionable bond spray) as they are just removeable hang tags the ink doesn't need to be permanent. I've checked..and it washes right out...
I'd like to like embroidery but I'm put off by the PDF patterns and not knowing how to transfer them.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE embroidery! In terms of which way I'd prefer to have my patterns.. it honestly depends on what it is. If it's intricate, then I think I'd like the iron on patterns.. I bought some embroidery patterns that are gorgeous, but because they were PDF format, it took me FOREVER to trace them, and I didn't have a lightbox.. yeah I had to get a bit creative with the tracing!
ReplyDeleteLet's just say it involved two cellphones with a flashlight app turned on, my small reading light and my biggest pyrex dish! I was tracing onto a flour sack towel that was too large to use my window as a lightbox with. It came out alright, but that was a major pain.
I like the immediacy of the PDF patterns, but the ease of the printed ones... not much help am I? LOL :)
ReplyDeleteI embroider a lot and I like the PDF's over the iron-ons. I usually like to re-size the PDF's to fit with what I'm making and I use either a red transfer pencil or light and a washable pencil to transfer my designs
ReplyDeleteI don't do a lot of it, but I do enjoy doing hand embroidery. So far I've only used patterns that I've traced (fabric held up to the computer screen!) or drawn myself. I think I would prefer patterns that can be ironed on instead of on regular paper, but like I said, I don't have much experience! Although, I do agree with ange_moore - I've got some pillow cases from hubby's grandmother where I can see the pattern underneath & it kind of takes away from the beautiful work. So maybe .pdf is the way to go.

ReplyDeleteHello! I like the iron-on patterns best. I seem to make the least amount of mistakes with them! The bit of embroidery I've done has been mainly using the Jenny Hart/Sublime Stitching book.
ReplyDeleteI like to emboider. The only way I have used is the ink printed pattern, but I have only bought the pillowcase (or whatever I am embroidering) with the pattern already printed, so I couldn't tell you how to do it :0(

I have just started embroidering, and i love the PDF patterns, my kids have a little plastic desk with a light for tracing that makes transferring onto light fabrics really easy. the iron on things sound a bit like a pain in the butt...
ReplyDeleteI am becoming devoted to embroidery and incorporating it into quilts. I don't know much of iron on transfers. I usually use Chaco sheets which work perfectly along with a Sewline Trio ball point tip pen. Works awesome.

It's kind of goofy, but right now I'm working on an embroidery project where I traced onto wash-away solvey, then basted it to the fabric.

I have a long answer to this one, which I will try to simplify. There was a lady at market selling embroidery designs. And they were cute and I was interested. Turns out she does have them printed on light plain fabric but she charges $24.00 per block! And there were 12 blocks. And you HAVE to buy them all. Well, do the math. It was ridiculous. I do like to have the pattern preprinted on fabric but $24.00 a block is way too much. I backed out of the deal. She changed her price several times. Anyway I don't really do much embroidery but I'd like to because I'm lousy at it and need to get better. Your work is always so cute. I'm sure your embroidery is too.

I have never tried embroidery but I really want to because some of the vintage patterns I've found (mostly ones that are pre-1930) call for touches of embroidery on the skirts or sleeves. Clearly, it's something I should learn!

ReplyDeleteI only know few stitches of hand embroidery,actually learn it from the net.
I have not done much hand embroidery for years. My mother had a bunch of the Aunt Martha patterns and I have made a couple sets of pillow cases.

ReplyDeleteI love to embroider. I think the PDF patterns are the easiest to do, and the most fun for me. I like tracing the pattern on, it's like practice before you stitch and you can leave out anything you don't like. Thanks for the giveaway.

I used to embroidery years ago. Lately I have been seeing lots of quilts with embroidery center panels or blocks, and am thinking I'd like to do this again.

ReplyDeleteI love embroidery. I like the PDF patterns. I haven't found any washable printable ink yet to use in a printer. I often use pigma pen to trace my designs when embroidering with one color only. I have heard that the transfer eze is good to use as it washes away and you can put it in the printer.

I've never embroidered from a pattern, so I don't know about printing, but I do like the screen-printed embroidery panels by Prints Charming- do you know of them? ReplyDeleteI prefer the iron-on ones. I will go out of my way sometimes to get that as opposed to the PDF, if its available. If not, I will still get the PDF...just sort of inconvenient for me.

ReplyDeleteI love to do hand embroidery! I prefer the pdf patterns to iron on...I just don't care for the iron on colors. I trace using a very fine pencil and it completely disappears when I have stitched on it.

Embroidery is one craft I haven't really tried yet. My grandmother has always done the printed stitching embroidery, and I have several beautiful pieces she's made over the years.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. Pdfs are the way to go- easy for you and easy for the recipient. Plus, they can be adapted easily to a certain size when you print them out and I like that.
ReplyDeleteI love embroidery - I just bought a bunch of patterns while on vacation. I have never bought pdf patterns, but I would prefer those to having to wait for a pattern and pay for shipping. I trace my patterns with a water-soluble pen, because I could never cover up the lines.

ReplyDeleteI love embroidery patterns, but have not used any iron on ones. I prefer PDF patterns which I trace using a light box,and a fine pencil. I have read recently about a gel pen which can be used to mark your fabric then disappears when it is ironed.

I have never tried embroidery. It is on my list of things to learn when I have time though. I think that people make wonderful things using embroidery. I would say that for the most part I enjoy the PDF patterns that I recieve for things because you get them right away!

I really love other people's embroidery. The only thing I have done so far is hand embroidering one of my daughter's first drawings. Love that, but overall I am too impatient for that beautiful work. I love your patterns-so cute!

Great giveaway! As to embroidery...I really like it and prefer pdf patterns as I have had bad experiences with the washable print ones...the print bled and it was a tragedy! I cried. So pdf is best! xx

I love hand embroidery - it's my favourite thing to do. I prefer pdf patterns - only because they're easy to buy (no postage), and as I live outside the USA (in New Zealand) that is always the first thing I look for. I am always looking for new embroidery patterns so I hope you get yours published soon.

ReplyDeleteI have to admit it. The last time I used an embroidery pattern, rather than just making it up as I go, I used one of my mom's books from the 70s, with the purple ink? Bright harvest yellow cover....
So, I don't know. I like pdfs for other things (knitting patterns), so....
